ACCLAIMED TELEVISION and movie director Olivia “Olive” Lamasan almost didn’t graduate college. And it was all because she almost flunked her film class under Fr. Nicasio “Fr. Nick” Cruz, SJ. Bent on proving to Fr. Nick that she didn’t deserve to fail his class, the former student council president of Maryknoll College (now Miriam) grabbed an offer to be a production assistant (PA) for a movie after graduation.

“I wanted to show him that I’ll be somebody someday and [I] deserve only the best grade! And I would do it in six months!” she says. It disappointed her advertising professor to see her pursuing another field because she had great potential in advertising.

Eight months into being a PA, however, Olive wasn’t laughing. She wanted to quit her job and pursue her original plan of going into advertising. As a PA, Olive was, quite literally, at the beck and call of everyone in the movie set. “The work was not only difficult. Worse, it was too degrading for a high-profile student leader,” she says.

IN TERMS of energy and creativity, few can beat the Communication major. Always the one most eager to recite in class and the one with the most vibrant and innovative presentations, the Comm major stands out, even in the Ateneo.

Commotion met with the two to discover the source of all their energy, what keeps them busy aside from academics, and why they think they are the embodiment of an upcoming Communication major.

BATHROOM READING

MOST OF us youngsters don’t want to get our fingers dirty by reading the local broadsheets, or even get as much as a whiff of the paper that exudes hints of burnt carbon. Of course, there is a pool of other, more substantial reasons on why adolescents would much rather watch that horrible telenovela than pick up that paper, and that’s most probably because they’re, we’re, all wired up.

When you’re walking down the hallways, there are three things you always encounter: a mobile phone ringing, some random dude with a laptop, or a group of kids laughing at some video posted on YouTube. We’re the techjuvies who have meaningful conversations on Yahoo Messenger, courtships through SMS, and use Multiply, MySpace, or Facebook to stalk our crushes and be in the know. And although we mainly use and abuse technology for our personal whims, there are still a few who have thoughtfully garnered the little tech knowledge they have in attempt to better society. CLOSE YOUR eyes, and imagine you’re in an ecological park, with trees rustling their leaves in the breeze, and the wind blowing softly in your face. Next, imagine you’re in a leisure park, hearing laughter from the knots of people strolling the day away under the warmth of the afternoon sun. Lastly, imagine you’re in an open-air mall, except that each shop or restaurant brings a little bit of Europe, Asia, and America in one place.

Open your eyes to a fusion of your imaginations—except that your imaginations become real, right here and now. When you open your eyes, you’ll see Serendra. (more…)
